What is kundalini yoga
Kundalini is a Sanskrit word which symbolises coiled sleeping snake. It is also symbolises man's unmanifested or inactive power housed at the base of spine in a person. Kundalini Jagran means raising this energy from base of the spine to the top of the head. It is done with the help of various yogic practices which include chanting mantra, yoga poses and meditation. Kundalini is also referred as a dormant energy. Before performing Kundalini yoga we must know about three major nadis and the seven chakras.
What is Nadi
Nadi is a channel for the flow of vital energy. There are 72000 nadis which are moving through our spine. Don't misunderstand Nadi with nerve. Nadi is a nonphysical channel. One cannot see them by operating the spine but can be experienced by certain yogic practices.

Types of Nadis
As mentioned above there are 72000 nadis. These are broadly classified as Ida, Pingala and Sushumna. All the nadis are originating from the base of the spine. Ida and Pingala are running parallel to each other through spine. Ida is situated on the left side and pingala is on the right side of the spine. If we see architecture of spine there are two orifice on either side of the spine.
Ida and pingala are active in normal human body based on day and night cycle of the earth. Weakness, balance and over active of either of the Nadi will decide the various characteristics of individual( This will be discuss separately). But in short, Ida represents feminine nature comprising of lunar property and Pingala represents masculine nature comprising properties of sun.
What is chakra
The word Chakra means wheel. In yogic science, the Chakra is the place where sukshma sharir and Sthula sharir meets each other. These Chakra also known as power house or power Bank of the human body. Types of Chakras
There are one hundred fourteen power points in our body where the bunches of nadis are found. These 114 power points are broadly classified into seven chakra. Out of seven chakra, six chakra are situated on Sushumna nadi and the seventh one is situated just above the head in space.
The seven chakras are classified as muladhar Chakra, swadhisthana chakra, manipura chakra, anahat chakra, vishuddha chakra, ajna chakra and the seventh is sahasrara situated just above the head. ( We will discuss various chakra separately)
A certain amount of energy is flowing through all these Chakras. The chakra which is more activated, amount of energy is flowing through it will be more as compared to the Chakra which is dormant or imbalance. Sushumna is the Nadi when activated, pierce all the six chakras situated on its axis and opens the door way to sahasrara chakra.
Sushumna nadi
As described above, there are three main channels for flow of vital energy. These are Ida, Pingala and Sushumna. Ida situated on the left side and pingala lies on the right side of the spine. Sushumna lies in the centre of these two Nadi system. Sushumna also represents the balance of Ida and Pingala.
Sushumna, in Yogic system, is the matter of concern. It is dormant in all the human being. You need certain Yogic practices to activate this Nadi. Sushumna, once activated, pierce the six Chakra of the body and moving straight from muladhara chakra to ajna chakra and opens door way to sahasrara chakra which situated just above the head in space. Sushumna moves through the centre of the spine.
Most of the people live and die with ida and pingala. The centre nadi remains dormant. Sushumna nadi is very important topic in Yogic system. Yogis strive to activate and tap the dormant power of this Nadi.
